Alexis is the last girl you’d expect to sell her soul. She already has everything she needs–an adorable boyfriend, the perfect best friend, and a little sister who’s finally recovering after being possessed by an evil spirit, then institutionalized.
Alexis is thrilled when her sister joins a club; new friends are just what Kasey needs. It’s strange, though, to see how fast the girls in The Sunshine Club go from dorky and antisocial to gorgeous and popular. Soon Alexis learns that the girls have pledged an oath to a seemingly benevolent spirit named Aralt. Worried that Kasey’s in over her head again, Alexis and her best friend Megan decide to investigate by joining the club themselves. At first, their connection with Aralt seems harmless. Alexis trades in her pink hair and punky clothes for a mainstream look, and quickly finds herself reveling in her newfound elegance and success.
Instead of fighting off the supernatural, Alexis can hardly remember why she joined in the first place. Surely it wasn’t to destroy Aralt…why would she hurt someone who has given her so much, and asked for so little in return?
What I thought:
After the first book’s flaming ending, the whole family moves into a new house, ghost free. After Kasey finally comes home (she went to an institute for a while), she’s alone as she enters high school. When she finally starts making friends, it looks like everything is going well, until those girls start to change, and become the Sunshine club. They become very pretty, they have more charm and a bit of persuasion, they can’t do anything wrong and are just about perfect. How they got that way is thanks to an oath sworn over a creature of sorts that resides in a book, Aralt. They say he only wants them to do their best, but it makes you wonder what he will want in return.
Alexis completely changes in this book. At first she’s the older sister scoping out the Sunshine group to make sure Kasey isn’t trying anything dangerous again, and the next thing we know the accidental bond with Aralt is taking effect. She starts caring about her appearance, worrying about the little things that she never cared about before, and has a hard time remembering who she was before sometimes. She starts thinking in terms of “what would Aralt want”. The mindset of the girls and their strive for perfection was kind of intense and disturbing sometimes, especially near the end of the book and their “graduation”.
While the first book dealt with ghosts, this one seems to deal more with a demon/monster of sorts, that makes deals with girls. The whole cult-like aspect of the other girls in the club was kind of creepy, but the first book was still scarier to me (especially with the dolls). The ending was really good though, especially how a certain event is going to carry us over to the third book. There isn’t really a cliffhanger, but you will definitely want to continue reading!
